Whether you’re influencing, selling, negotiating or presenting, the preparation process is similar. Know your audience; consider your questions; structure your argument; think through their potential questions and concerns; then formulate and rehearse your responses.
Having done your preparation, be willing to ‘rip up the speech’. Once you’re there, Face-2-Face, you want to be fully present, open, responsive and flexible. Keep your planned questions and advocacy available to refer to and work through but also be extremely open to input, suggestion, tangents and creative new solutions.
You can’t go anywhere until you know where you’re at. Do a mini-360 to get a sense of how you’re perceived by others and where they believe your communication skills can improve.
